“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” Luke 6:36

Here is a commandment from our Lord, Jesus Christ. Not a polite suggestion, a commandment. In the same way that God is merciful, we ourselves must be merciful. How is God merciful? Consider his mercy to you. He forgave you; you are to forgive others. He has provided for your daily needs; see to the needs of others. He has given you Christ as Lord; share the knowledge of Jesus with everyone who needs him. We do not obsess about fairness as Christians. We don’t wait for someone to treat us right before we bless them. We don’t need permission from our enemies before we show them Christ-like love. We are merciful, just like our Father is merciful, who “is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.”

Father, this is easier said than done. Patiently bear with me as I grow in mercy. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and empower me to be good to everyone—even those who hate me. Give me wisdom, Father, so in my charity I am efficacious. Help me to be like you, to be merciful to all.
